The city
The emirate of Sharjah is located in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which lie on the coast of the Arabian Gulf. To the west, Sharjah is situated next to the better-known and higher-profile emirate of Dubai. To the north, it borders Ras al-Khaimah, another of the emirates which is growing at a breakneck pace, and to the east it shares a frontier with Fujairah, one of the less-spoilt emirates.
To the south is Oman, and directly across the Arabian Gulf is the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The airport
Sharjah International Airport is around 15 km from the city centre and lies next to the Emirates Road, a major artery which runs through the country and connects Abu Dhabi in the south to Ras al-Khaimah in the north.
The roads immediately surrounding the airport are generally not congested, but getting there from Sharjah or Dubai can involve negotiating some heavy traffic. See our Transport Options section for more details.
