At the time of writing in early 2008, the following nationalities were eligible for a free 60-day tourist visa upon arrival at Sharjah airport:

  • GCC (Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait). Other nationalities who are permanently resident in GCC countries and who work in major professions are also eligible for an automatic visa upon arrival in Sharjah.
  • United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Portugal, Ireland, Greece, Finland, Spain, Monaco, Vatican City, Iceland, Andorra, San Marino, Liechtenstein, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Brunei, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Malaysia.

If you do not belong to one of the above nationalities, then it is possible to obtain a 96-hour transit visa which will allow you to leave the airport and re-enter again within 96 hours. This requires having an onward booking from Sharjah and should be arranged in advance through your airline – which in most cases will be Air Arabia.

The UAE's visa policy is relatively stable and sudden changes are unlikely. However, it's always best to double-check before you leave through the website of your home country's embassy, or using www.uaeinteract.com/travel/visas.asp
