Outdoor activities in Kuwait depend heavily on the time of year. Between May and September, it’s simply too hot to spend any time outside in the middle of the day. The rest of the year is much better, and while the winter months can be chilly in December of January, you’re still unlikely to come across much rain, and will be treated to bright, sunny days.
Some ideas of outdoor things to do in Kuwait City are as follows:
- Head to the beach. The public beaches in Kuwait are not great, so it’s best to buy a day pass to use the facilities at a beach hotel. The best spots for this are the Kempinski Julai’a, which is some distance out of town on the eastern seaboard of the city, or the Radisson SAS (+965 567 3000), which has its own small private beach. The newly-renovated Messilah Beach Hotel (www.messilah.com.kw) is due to open later in 2008 and should also be a good option once completed;
- Go diving. There are a couple of good spots within easy reach of Kuwait City, and a range of companies and dive centres will arrange equipment and trips. Try Dive Caroline (www.divecaroline.com, +965 371 9289).
- Take a walk around the Mubarakiya souk. This is best done before 1pm or after 7pm, when most shops are open. You’ll find a bustling collection of fruit, vegetable and fish sellers, as well as individual shops offering household goods, plus jewellery, spices and other local products which can make good souvenirs.
