While Kuwait’s tourism industry is virtually non-existent, children are welcomed and there are plenty of things to keep the kids occupied if you find yourself in town.

  • Visit the largest aquarium in the Middle East and the IMAX cinema at the Kuwait Scientific Center (www.tsck.org.kw, +965 834 888). It’s located on the seafront of the Salmiya area and features an educational section specially designed for children.
  • Hit the Aqua Park Kuwait (www.aquaparkkuwait.com), which opened in 1995 and claims to be the largest water park in the Gulf. It has a wide range of slides and flumes, and is open between April and October. Entry costs KD3.5 ($12.50), while kids aged three and under go free. It’s located next to the Kuwait Towers on Arabian Gulf Street.
  • The extensive Shaab Leisure Park (www.shaabpark.com +965 561 3777) has a variety of rides, attractions and entertainment aimed at children. Call in advance to check opening times and prices.
  • Check out the Olympic-sized ice-skating rink in central Kuwait City (+965 241 1151). It’s open from 9am until 9pm every day except Saturday, and entry costs KD 1.5 ($4) per person.
  • On hot days, a good bet is to head to a mall. Try the Marina World (+965 572 2299) complex in the Salmiya area, which has abundant shops, restaurants and cafes as well as a children’s play area.
  • Alternatively, go and see a film. You’ll find cinemas inside the main malls in Kuwait City, like Marina World or The Avenues, all of which show most mainstream and western films (though the racier scenes all tend to be edited out). More information is available on www.kncc.com
