If you're travelling with children and in Dubai for a short time, then we've put together some ways of keeping them occupied.

  • Take them to the Wild Wadi water park (www.wildwadi.com, +971 4 348 4444), located next to the Burj al-Arab and Jumeirah Beach Hotel. It covers 12 acres and has 23 rides, including what is apparently the tallest and fastest freefall water slide outside the USA. As with all outdoor activities, beware of the heat during the summer and avoid being in the sun in the middle of the day.
  • Seeing a film is a good option when it's too hot to be outside. Most of Dubai's malls have multiplex cinemas attached to them, with tickets costing around Dhs 30 ($8). Films tend to come out only slightly later here than in Europe or the US, but the selection of mainstream movies is generally as good as you'd find in most world cities.
  • Head to the beach or the park during the cooler times of the day and year. Both are child-friendly, with beaches offering shallow, clean water and no major danger from currents or jellyfish for most of the year. Check out our Outdoors section for ideas on where to go.
  • For a "true" Dubai experience, book the kids in at Ski Dubai (www.skidxb.com, +971 4 341 0010). The group lessons for children are reasonably priced and all equipment and clothing is included. The complex includes a tobogan run.
