At the time of writing in December 2007, the following nationalities were eligible for a free 60-day tourist visa upon arrival in Dubai:

  • GCC (Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait). Other nationalities who are permanently resident in GCC countries and who work in major professions are also eligible for an automatic visa upon arrival in Dubai.
  • United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Portugal, Ireland, Greece, Finland, Spain, Monaco, Vatican City, Iceland, Andorra, San Marino, Liechtenstein, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Brunei, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Malaysia.

If you do not belong to one of the above nationalities, then it is possible to obtain a 96-hour transit visa which will allow you to leave the airport and re-enter again within 96 hours. The visa is issued on arrival at the airport, although your journey must meet the following conditions:

  • Minimum of 8 hour transit time
  • You must have an onward booking with your airline, which sponsors the visa

The UAE's visa policy is relatively stable and sudden changes are unlikely. However, it's always best to double-check before you leave through the website of your home country's embassy, or using www.uaeinteract.com/travel/visas.asp.
