Inside the airport
Although it's not as large or as flashy as Dubai, Doha’s duty-free shopping offers a good selection of cut-price goodies:
- The main duty-free area is downstairs in the Departures and transit zone. It’s home to 1,200 square metres of shopping, with all the major duty-free brands available.
- If you’re flying through the Premium Terminal, then another 500 square metres of shopping can be found on the ground floor, whilst there’s also a smaller shop in the Arrivals area of the main airport, next to the luggage claim belts.
- For those feeling fortunate, there’s also the Millionaire raffle, which offers a prize of one million US dollars. Tickets to enter the draw can be bought in the main duty-free area in Departures, and cost around $250 each.
- All the shopping facilities are run by the Qatar Duty Free company (www.qatardutyfree.net, +974 462 6902), which in the near future plans to allow customers to browse and buy goods online before picking them up at the airport. Check the website for updates.
ALCOHOL
A word of warning for those leaving Doha airport: the tight restrictions on alcohol consumption and distribution in Qatar mean that bringing alcohol into the country is not permitted.
After claiming your bags on arrival and heading through customs, any alcohol found in your luggage will be confiscated. If that happens, you’ll be issued with a ticket which allows you to reclaim your goods at the airport when leaving Doha.
Note that this only applies to passengers arriving at Doha airport and going into the city, and not those on transit visits remaining in the terminal itself.
