The weather in Doha can make it difficult to spend time outdoors for long periods of the year. Between May and September you can expect the temperature to be in the high 30s or early 40s, with uncomfortably high levels of humidity to boot.

If you are here during the summer, then it’s probably safest to stay out of the heat – at least during the day – and stick to air-conditioned malls, restaurants and hotels during your stay.

At other times of year, though, the weather is ideal for getting some fresh air. Rain is a fairly infrequent occurrence in Qatar, and even during the winter you’ll be treated to blue skies and temperatures in the late teens and early 20s.

  • Doha’s main outdoor attraction is its pleasant seafront corniche, which runs for around seven kilometres around the bay. It’s busiest in the evening, when families, joggers and strollers fill up the waterfront area. You can also take a short boat ride from the corniche, using one of the many boat.
  • Splash out in the shallow waters of the Gulf by hiring a sailing boat from the Intercontinental Hotel (+974 484 4444). They cost QR 75 ($20) per hour.
  • Head to al-Waqrah, a sleepy fishing village on the eastern side of Doha, about 15-20 minutes from the airport by taxi. There’s not a huge amount to do, apart from see a fishing harbour and sandy beaches suitable for kids. Make sure to organise your return transport in advance.
  • The best beaches in Qatar are actually outside of Doha, around the Inland Sea area in the south of the country. They require a little more time and effort to reach, and you'll have to go through a local tour operator. Try the Qatar Tourism website for starters (www.experienceqatar.com) Always remember to dress modestly at public beaches.
  • If the time of year permits, you could fit in a round of golf at the Doha Golf Club (www.dohagolfclub.com, +974 483 2338). The 18-hole course is located around 4km to the north of central Doha, and is open to non-members. If you haven’t got time for a full round, there’s also a 9-hole floodlit course and a driving range.
