The country
Bahrain is a tiny island state located in the Arabian Gulf. It lies just off the coast of Saudi Arabia, to which it is connected by a spectacular, 26km-long bridge called the King Fahd Causeway.
Slightly further down the Arabian Peninsula is the state of Qatar, so close to Bahrain that there are plans to link the two countries by another major bridge.
Bahrain’s capital city is called Manama, located in the north-eastern tip of the island, and in practice it’s the only major urban area in the country. The northern half of Bahrain has a higher population density than the south, which is home to large expanses of desert, military zones and some of the country’s national parks.
The airport
Bahrain airport is located on a tiny island called Muharraq, which lies on the north-eastern tip of Bahrain itself and is connected to the mainland by several road bridges.
The airport is roughly 5km or 15 minutes’ drive from the centre of Manama. See Transport Options for ways of getting to and from the airport.
