Landing in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi’s airport is small and easy to navigate. The following information covers all aspects of arriving at the airport, whether your final destination is Abu Dhabi, whether you’re leaving the airport during your stopover, or whether you’ve got a short time to wait between connecting flights.

Staying in the airport for an onward flight

  • After leaving your flight, short transit passengers on Etihad should check the displays to find the relevant departure gate for their onward flight. If you’ve got time to spare between flights, then check our Inside the Airport section for ideas on what to do.
  • If you haven’t already got a boarding pass for your next flight, then follow the signs to the transfer desks which are located on the upper level of the main dome building between Gates 9 and 7/8. There is a dedicated desk for Etihad transfers to New York next to the normal transfer desk.
  • Some Etihad flights use Terminal 1A, which is located in between the dome and the main terminal building. If this is the case with you, check with the information desk for directions.

Leaving the airport

If your final destination is Abu Dhabi, or you’ve got time to leave the airport during your stopover, then follow the signs to passport control, which will then take you through to baggage claim. Use our visas section for more details on whether you require an arrivals visa to leave the airport.

  • There is a small duty-free arrivals shop next to the baggage claim area. For those without local alcohol licenses, this is your last chance to stock up before going into the city, where alcohol can only be bought inside certain hotels, restaurants and bars.
  • For the moment there are no left-luggage facilities available at the airport, but lockers were being installed at the time of writing.
  • After going through customs, you’ll reach the main departure/arrivals hall which has information desks, ATMs and a café. Click here for our section on transport options for leaving the airport
  • Close to the car park outside the airport is a series of car rental and bank counters designed for arriving and departing passengers. There’s also an Emirates Post office, with a new duty free shop under construction at the time of writing.
Arriving in Terminal 2

Terminal 2 at AUH is significantly smaller than Terminal 1 and is used by point-to-point airlines, whereas all Etihad flights leave from Terminal 1.
  • The terminal is easy to navigate for new arrivals, and there’s a small duty free store for passengers, as well as an ATM and coffee shop.
  • Any passengers transiting between Terminals 1 and 2 should ask at an information point in either terminal for details on a transfer, which should take around 5 minutes by car or shuttle bus.
  • Head to our Transport Options section for information on arriving at or departing from Terminal 2 at Abu Dhabi airport.
