About
What’s the idea?
Ever wondered if you could escape the airport between flights instead of walking around duty-free...again?
Found yourself stuck in yet another airline lounge, 12 café lattes later, but with hours left before your onward flight?
With the world travelling more and more every year, chances are you've wasted precious hours of your busy life, arriving, departing, connecting, but mostly just waiting around at airports.
This is where we come in. Whether you're a regular business traveller, planning your holiday in advance or already on your journey, we can help you make the most of it. Did you know that Amsterdam airport had an art gallery and a casino? Or that the famous Gold Souk in the old commercial heart of Dubai is a short taxi ride from the terminal?
We use our local knowledge of cities around the world to help you make the most of your travels, whether you want to spice up a three-hour stopover or you're staying around a little longer.
A surprising number of travellers don't realise that you can actually leave an airport and soak up some of the local sights between connecting flights, providing you are not subject to visa restrictions and have enough time to spare.
But even if you're too tired or too cautious to go sightseeing or sample the local fare between flights, the new generation of airports are more like mini-cities than transportation points, offering everything from spas to cinemas, art galleries to world class restaurants and hotel rooms available by the hour.
How does the site work?
For each location, we cover everything about the airport itself, telling you where to get a taxi or find the bus stop, where you can have a shower or get a hair cut, catch up on emails or enjoy a three course meal, not to mention a host of other stuff you didn’t even know about.
More importantly, we tell where you can get a glimpse of the local attractions outside the terminals. Of course, the last thing we want you to do is miss your flight so we also tell you what you can safely squeeze in depending on how much time you have to spare.
The central feature on the site is our 'Fly Wise' box, which appears on every page. Use the drop-down menus to select a location. Then choose the type of information you’re looking for – from transport options to organised tours. Each category is broken down into sub-sections telling you about everything from visa regulations, to how much wine you can bring in, to the city’s main must-see attractions.
Who is the site for?
The site is useful to anyone taking a flight. Whether you only travel once or twice a year, or you're a frequent business flyer who spends more time in the air than in the office, you'll find a wealth of relevant, updated information on the site.
Starting in the Arabian Gulf, we're constantly building up our database of airports and cities around the world to offer ever more resources to global travellers.
How do we research our content?
All of our content is written and researched by people who live in these cities and can give you local knowledge, telling you when it’s rush hour or how late the shops are open. We visit each airport that we cover, and keep in touch with the airport authorities to ensure we're as up-to-date as possible. This on-the-ground insight sets us apart from many other airport and travel sites.
But we're certainly not perfect, which is why we also rely on you to let us know when we've got things wrong, or when our content needs updating. At the bottom of every relevant page you'll see a Posting function, which allows you to submit feedback or tips that you think would be useful for other readers.
Can you get the information in print format?
We also publish a bi-monthly magazine, called Time in Transit: Gulf, which covers six airports and cities in the Arabian Gulf. Our next issue will be released in mid-February 2008, and you'll be able to pick it up in certain airport terminals, airline lounges, hotels, travel agencies and bookshops across the region.
Why do we only cover locations in the Arabian Gulf? Will we cover more?
We launched our website and magazine in the Gulf because it is home to the fastest-growing airports and airlines in the world. And, thanks to its geographical location, a huge proportion of traffic coming through the Gulf is transit – international passengers using the airports for connecting flights.
But the Gulf is just the start. In 2008, we plan to expand our coverage to the world’s major travel hubs in Europe, Asia and North America. We’re doing this as quickly as we can, but also taking our time to ensure the information we provide is accurate and well-researched.
Send an e-mail to info@timeintransit.com and you can stay updated with our monthly e-newsletter, The Transiter, which will be winging its way to inboxes around the world from February 2008.
Do we review airports?
Our mission is to help you make better use of your time in and around the airports you're travelling through, not to tell you how good or bad they are. None of our editorial content is sponsored or funded by airports or airlines.
Are we recruiting?
We’re always keen to hear from people who are interested in joining our small but growing team.
In particular, we are looking for experienced travel journalists to help us provide content on certain locations. If you would like to know more, then please send a covering e-mail and a CV to jobs@timeintransit.com.
